Value of Serum beta-hCG in Pathogenesis of Pre-Eclampsia

Abstract


Background: Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy specific disorder responsible for maternal and foetal morbidity and mortality. The aim of the present study was to find out the association of serum level of maternal beta-hCG in normal pregnancy and pre-eclampsia and its role in development of pre-eclampsia.

Methods: The prospective randomized controlled study was conducted on 50 cases of pre-eclampsia with singleton foetus and 50 normotensive singleton mothers in the third trimester of pregnancy. The paired samples of serum samples were estimated for beta-hCG and results were analyzed statistically using SPSS 17.

Result: The serum level of maternal beta-hCG was markedly raised in preeclampsia (18,087.42 2,014.17 mIU/mL) in comparison to controlled (8,391.06 1,909.64 mIU/mL) and parallel with the severity of pre-eclampsia.

Conclusion: The maternal serum level of beta-hCG plays one of the important role in pathogenesis of pre-eclampsia and its severity.
